English Translation by Sethi Krishan Chand:
The post made by Regina Resta, President of Verbamulandi Art and Poetry Forum
And framed in beautiful words by Mr Goffredo Palmerini who writes:-
At the beginning of Salento (a place in south Italia) between Lecce and Galatone.Art and Sacred Poetry's
International Prize ceremony held on 6th May 2018 at the Great Shrine of the SS. Crucifix; A real architectural jewel of Italia.
GALATONE (Lecce) - A warm air and an uncertain sunny sky accompanied our new visit to Lecce,
the city of art and baroque architecture that make it an extraordinary unicum, with the maze of paved alleys leading to the heart of its historical center. We enter from the mighty Porta Napoli, in front of the obelisk. We admire in detail the churches, the Paisiello theater, houses, courtyards, squares, portals, windows and balconies, in the typical honey-colored amber-colored stone. Everything is embellished by the rich doodles of tinsel and sculptures. The streets are narrow and the prospects are more marked, until you reach the large square of the Cathedral, where the beautiful city in its small streets is expanded in the architectural outline, which is indeed suggested frame, and the soaring bell tower almost is the guardian of such beauty. A bit of a narrow road, full of little shops with handmade crafts and souvenirs, until the sky is reconquered in Piazza sant'Oronzo, the patron of the city erected on a column, where the baroque gives way to the oldest and superb vestige of the Roman amphitheatere.
The city is full of tourists, many foreigners, who swarm through the streets ravished in admiration and amazement, on this first Sunday of May. These are the wonders of the Belpaese, its treasures. And Lecce is one of the bright examples. We leave the city in the early afternoon, with a faint hint of rain immediately returned. We go towards Gala-tone. It is an enchantment of the Salento landscape, adorned with ancient olive groves, leaf figs, almond trees and vineyards on freshly milled lands, often divided by small stone walls laid out in dry stone. Every now and then among the olive trees there is a "nuraghe" of pebbles dulled by time, it seems almost a temple in the beauty of this Salento countryside. Only the sight of the wounds left by the xylella, which unfortunately is tormenting this part of Puglia, the Salento, is saddened by the olive trees with their dried hair or the already mutilated branches and the skeletal trunks. And yet signs of recovery are noticed here and there, to feed the hope of the end of this disaster. Just twenty kilometers along the easy artery that leads to the sea of Gallipoli and already the profile of domes and bell towers announces Galatone, a charming town whose name from the greek recalls milk, precious for its medieval and baroque architectures that make it one of the authentic villages of Italy. With Greek-Byzantine origins, Galatone has been strategic for its position in defense from the Sa-racine raids, as told by the remaining urban walls and the Norman Castle.
Homeland of the greatest humanist of southern Italy, the medical philosopher and astronomer Antonio De Ferraris (Galatone, 1444 - Lecce, 1517) called the Galateo - to whom an important literary prize is dedicated - Galatone exposes the architectural beauties of its numerous late churches. renaissance and baroque, of the nineteenth-century palazzetti and of the ti-piche houses with the courtyards. Worthy of a visit are the Collegiate Church of the Assumption, a Latin cross, with a splendid façade and the bell tower, with a magnificent sculpted stone baptistry, the paintings by Donato Antonio d'Orlando on the altars and a precious Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian Mattia Preti, and also the church of San Sebastiano and San Rocco, the churches of San Francesco, San Giovanni Battista, Madonna delle Grazie, all five-seventeenth-century, the church of the Madonna Odigitria and the abbey of Basilia-na origin of Sant 'Angelo della Salute, both from the thirteenth century, the sixteenth-century Palazzo Mar- chesale, and finally the splendid Santuario del SS. Crucifix of the Pietà
Last but not least, this true architectural and artistic jewel, the Sanctuary of the SS. Crucifix, built in the late seventeenth century after the collapse of the pre-existing church. Magnificently the baroque façade, built on three orders in Lecce and Carparo stone, enriched with statues. The interior is finely decorated, with a wide use of pure gold, especially in the richly elaborately decorated high altar, embellished with spiral columns and bas-reliefs, to which the architect Giuseppe Zimbalo dedicated his genius. At the center of the altar is the icon of the SS. Crucifix, dating back to the fourteenth century. On the transept rises the entirely frescoed octagonal dome. Also interesting are the paintings that accompany the temple, raised in 1796 to Sanctuary by Pope Pius VI. It is one of the most representative cult buildings of the Salento Baroque. The icon of the SS. Crucifix and its miracles marked the different phases of construction of the temple and the work of architects, designers, master builders, stonemasons, painters and sculptors. This jewel leaves enchanted and amazed everyone for the first time you enter, admired by its dazzling splendor.
The first edition of the Sacred Art and Poetry Prize, promoted and organized by the international cultural association Verbumladiart, which is based in Galatone, is in this place of magnificent beauty and spirituality. It is 6 pm, the start time of the award ceremony. Antonio Settanni leads with grace, professionalism and speedy an evening full of presences and meanings. It starts with the greetings of the Municipality of Galatone, present with Deputy Mayor Daniela Colazzo and the Councilor for Social Services Caterina Dorato. Massimo Milone, in thanking for the honor he was given with the tributed SpeCial Award, with a brief intervention outlines his journalistic experience at the head of Rai Vaticano, a privileged point of observation of the "revolutionary" activity of pope Fran -cesco, also in the field of communication. A pontiff elected in a particularly difficult juncture, followed by the resignation of Benedict XVI - the one before Celestino V in 1294 - yet so full of changes, in substance and outward forms, not always included in the right way by some environment of the Vatican Curia. And yet, although in the presence of difficulties, Pope Francis's work of renewal continues, however, to refocus the Church's attention more and more towards the outskirts of the world and towards the last, calling Christians to the authentic witness in service and in be humble. Prophetic signs that almost every day find substance in significant gestures of the Pontiff "come from a far", yet so close in the heart and in communion not only of Christians, but of all men of good will.
